An observational drawing course inspired by nature
This is a calm, supportive drawing course designed for adults who love nature and want to slow down, focus, and rediscover their ability to draw.
Over six weekly sessions, you’ll be gently guided through the foundations of observational drawing using graphite pencils.
Rather than rushing to a finished result, we take time to truly see, breaking images down into shapes, understanding tone and texture, and building confidence step by step.
This course is ideal if you’ve always said “I can’t draw”, if you used to draw years ago and lost confidence, or if you’re simply craving a quiet, creative space for yourself.
By the end of the course, you’ll have completed a carefully developed A4 graphite drawing, along with a clear understanding of how it was created, so you can continue drawing long after the course ends.
What the course covers
- Learning to observe shapes, proportions, and negative space
- Breaking complex images down into manageable stages
- Mark making, tone, and texture using graphite pencils
- Setting out an image accurately and without pressure
- Shading, blending, and building depth gradually
- Adding detail with intention (and knowing when to stop)
The subject matter is nature-inspired, such as wildlife or botanical forms, chosen to be detailed yet approachable.
Course structure
- 6 weekly sessions Tuesday afternoons 1-3 (beginning February 17th)
- 2 hours per session (12 hours total)
- One shared reference image (or closely related options)
- Suitable for beginners and those returning to drawing
No prior experience is needed, just curiosity and patience.
